There used to be rites that were practiced when a boy became a man.

For Natives, it was counting coup, or stealing a horse.

For Europeans it was venturing off to another country.

We no longer have rites of passage.

We don’t. There are a lot of things we don’t have anymore, sacrificed on the altar of cheap consumer goods and material ease and comfort. There is no opportunity to fight for glory, mainly because there is little worth fighting for.

We live in a soulless world run by soulless people designed to achieve soulless ends. I get sick of hearing about how this is “the best time to be alive.” Sure, I like modern sanitation, medicine, indoor plumbing, and electricity. But all of that was invented a century or more ago. This is the age of plastic. It is the most unnatural time to be alive. And there is more horror to come.
